Brú Theatre, Galway Dance Project and the Town Hall Theatre present this showcase of works in progress from two Galway based artists who are also Remote Control alumni. Remote Control is an artist development programme for artists working across theatre and dance in Galway city and county.
Eibhleann Caffrey:
Eibhleann Caffrey is a writer and director based in Galway City. Her work explores issues facing Irish teens and the influence of social media in our day-to-day lives. Through the use of verse and rhyme, Eibhleann brings the virtual space into the theatrical, in order to tackle generational conflict, influencer culture and the resulting mental health challenges.
Eibhleann will present a reading of her new play “Ham” "Ham" was a piece that was written and rehearsed during Remote Control 3. The piece tells the story of Caoimhe Kelly, a stand-up comedian who ruins her career with a controversial post online. After just receiving her "big break" opportunity, Caoimhe's life start to fall apart. Her return home to her deliver the life changing career news does not go as planned, as her long-term boyfriend Cian unexpectedly dumps her. Caoimhe's response is to have one too many drinks and publicly declare via Instagram: "I hate men!". The audience meets Caoimhe as she wakes the following morning to deal with the ramifications of her online outburst.
Can you fight the fear? Poor Caoimhe is having the worst morning of her life. She drank too much last night, has a headache, and publicly declared her hatred of men to her thousands of followers online. Caoimhe is a comedian, who after years of gigging, is finally offered her big break. On the day where all of her dreams come true, Caoimhe experiences heartbreak. She copes in the only way she knows how- with a few drinks and a rant that will turn in to her most famous performance to date.
Siobhán Manson
Siobhán Manson is an Irish dancer from Galway. She trained at the Hession School and went on to perform the principal role in Riverdance for over 15 years. Siobhán was a participant in Remote Control in 2021 where she explored ways of combining spoken word and dance. Siobhán is currently undertaking IRC funded research at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick.
For this showcase, Siobhán will present an excerpt taken from a performance choreographed for a research project - “Dancing the Feminist - An Arts Practice Investigation of Women in Irish Step Dance”. The piece explores themes of performative gender, bodily knowledge and the shared human experience.
