Equipped with his Field Recorder, the Song Collector and his trusty dog Lomax have collected traditional music from all over the world, from American prison-songs to Mongolian throat singing (and everything in between). But there’s one song – a ‘special’ song – from the island of Ireland that he’s never been able to collect...
On an adventure from Galway’s Claddagh to the Aran Islands, dodging between séisiúin, wakes, fairytales and folklore, can the Song Collector catch the song before the world modernises – and traditional music is lost forever?
Drawing on the real work of song collectors like Alan Lomax, and set in a rapidly developing 1930s Ireland, The Song Collector asks questions about what culture is, how we can preserve it in changing times, and whether sometimes we need to adapt. Aimed at children aged 6+, this work-in-progress includes hand-drawn animation by Saorla Wright and Irish traditional music throughout.
Includes a brief Q&A with the audience.
Written and directed by Chris Moran.
